twenty eight: The Evans [22 Sep 2006|05:08pm]
In her room, Sara sat up in the bed with her back propped against the head board. She turned off the television so that she could speak with Lydia. The two women often confided to each other about their worries and problems. Their current conversation was no different. Sara was worried about Derrick because he had not returned to the mansion after Kevin’s graduation. Neither of them knew where he had gone or why he had not called. Lydia was also concerned about where Carson was. Even though he was ruthless and cold she still wanted to know where he was at all times.
Lydia excused herself from the room so that Sara could begin getting ready for bed. She wandered down the hallway toward her own room but found herself to be wide awake. Instead of retiring for the evening, as she originally planned, Lydia decided to check on the party to see if everything was in order. She would only stay for a few minutes so she would not embarrass her grandchildren.
Before she reached the staircase Lydia paused outside one of the guest rooms. The door was cracked and she could hear someone moving around inside the room. When Lydia peeked into the crack she saw someone standing at the open window. Carefully she nudged the door open further to see who it was. The person had his back to the door and his focus was on the view from the window. Lydia knew that the window overlooked the back side of the house and there was a nice view of the pool area. Whoever stood by the window was spying on the party.
Just as she was about to open the door and confront the man, a shimmer of light flashed from the object in the man’s hand. Lydia gasped as she realized that the man held a gun and it was aimed at the party guests down below.

All of the party guests were still gathered near the pool and by now they had formed one big group. The lights from the house shining over the candlelit swimming pool gave the water a darkness that was hypnotic. The tiny points of light floated across the surface as if to echo the stars in the sky.
Josh and Laura drew closer together as they embraced each other. Just as they were about to kiss Lori Jo interrupted by asking Laura a question about school. Lori Jo played a false sense of embarrassment when she realized that she had killed the moment.
Marie saw the episode and rolled her eyes at how ridiculous it was. Chris gave her a look that said the same thing. They pulled away from the group and began to laugh as they gave their commentary of the situation.
Leanne stood close by Kevin taking his hand into hers. Lana stood close by hanging on to every word that was said. The twins continued to share a single conversation but Leanne began to focus more on Kevin.
Everyone was so concerned with their own conversation and the people around them that no one saw the open window looking over them. There were several yards separating the house and the pool area where the group was gathered. No one could have know what was about to happen in the new few minutes as the man in the window took aim and fired several shots. Two bodies landed in the pool and water splashed into the air. A few people fell to the cement beneath their feet and screams rang through the air. Chaos broke out as the servants yelled for help and rushed toward the group.
An eerie silence spread as a body flew from the upstairs window collapsing into unconsciousness as the head hit the ground. The silence was broken by more screams.

Twenty Seven: The Evans [26 Apr 2006|09:04pm]
All around the pool area tables had been set up with a wide variety of food and drinks. Extra lights had been set up and hung in order to make the scene more festive. The lights in the swimming pool had been turned off revealing dozens of lit candles floating in the water. The guests were gathered around the tables and near the edge of the pool. Several servants were moving about tending to things.
Everyone was in good spirits as the party guests chatted among themselves as they spoke to friends and met new ones. Kevin stood near the shallow end of the pool talking to Leanne and Lana. Nearby Josh stood with his arm around Laura and two were engaged in a gregarious conversation with Lori Jo. Marie and Chris had just joined the group after a quick check up on Lawrence.
Marie introduced everyone to her brother and gave a quick report on Lawrence’s condition. “He was barely awake when I went up to see him. Larry told me he felt better but he just needed to sleep. He mumbled a few comments about wedding plans and then he fell asleep.” She took a sip of her drink and turned toward Laura, “Your mother seems to be going fine she was actually sitting up in her bed watching the television and Mrs. Lydia was keeping her company. Hopefully tomorrow they will be up and about.”
Laura nodded her head in agreement, “I hope so. This whole incident has been very strange.” She lowered her voice and said, “Kevin told me that Grandfather had fully recovered and took off. He also said that Grandmother doesn’t even know where he went!”
Marie raised an eyebrow, “Strange. You would think he would be the last to recover because of his age.” She turned toward the mansion and glanced up at the second story windows and whispered to herself, “I wonder what he’s up to.”

Kevin had been listening to the twins until he was distracted by Marie’s conversation. His attention was brought back to the girls only because they had been chattering endlessly without missing a beat. He vaguely remembered them saying something about their mother teaching at the elementary school and their father working offshore.
“…And he never gets to come home because his station is so far away.” Leanne was saying. Lana picked up with conversation. “He can’t afford to fly back every time he has a break so he has a plan set up where he works like half a year and then gets a month off. Or something like that.” Leanne started talking again, “Our mother isn’t too happy with the situation but it’s all he could do after he lost his job here in Northridge. He couldn’t find a job anywhere afterward.” Lana added, “It was the only option left for him.”
Kevin just kept listening as they went on. There was not much he could say so he just listened to them talk about their home life. He found it quite remarkable that they could pass the conversation back and forth as if they were one person speaking. It must be a “twin” thing, he concluded. As he was looking at them tried to find a way to tell them apart. Since they had dressed almost exactly alike he found the only way to remember which one was Leanne was to remember if she stood on the left or on the right. Even still he could not find a way to tell them apart physically.

Inside the mansion, the phone began to ring. Since the festivities of the evening were just beginning, there was no one around to answer the phone. The only people in the house were upstairs unable to take the call. There was one person who made it to the phone in time to answer it. He picked up the receiver and said, “Hello?”
The voice on the other end sounded urgent, “Yes, this is Dr. Murphy from Northridge Hospital. Is Mr. Evans available?”
The receiver smirked, “Which Mr. Evans would you prefer to speak with?”
Dr. Murphy sounded urgent, “Either will do, this concerns them both.”
The receiver cleared his throat, “This is Derrick Evans,” he lied.
Dr. Murphy continued, “Mr. Evans, Did your son speak with you about my visit to your home this afternoon? I need to discuss the results of some tests I ran in the labs.”
The false Derrick Evans continued, “Yes, sir, I believe he did. Tell me what you found out. I’m very anxious to know.”
The doctor began to go into details about the tests run on the clear bottle and what the possible results could have been. He eventually concluded that drug inside of the bottle was definitely a narcotic that had been ingested by Carson, Lawrence, and Sara. He also gave the scientific name and the generic name of the drug. In small doses it was harmless, but medium and large doses could have grisly side affects.
“Thank you for your concern, Doctor, I will personally see to it that the police are notified and that this matter is investigated.” An evil grin spread across his face as he hung up the phone. “It’s good to know that there are still good people left in this world,” he said to himself. “It’s just a shame that I’m not one of them.”
He pulled out a handgun from inside his coat and began to load the lethal object. The hit list just grew larger, thanks to the kind doctor. Once the kid and the old man were dead, he would have to pay a visit to his new friend at the hospital.

Twenty Six: The Evans [05 Jan 2006|12:25pm]
Lydia was at the door to greet everyone as they started to arrive at the mansion. She had received a phone call from Derrick about twenty minutes earlier warning her of the on-coming masses. The servants were in a rush to set up for the evening festivities. The dinning room was just barely repaired so the poolside was the more logical choice of places to host the celebration.
Kevin, Laura, and Josh were the first to make it back to the mansion. Anxiously they asked about the condition of the ones who had been confined to the house all evening.
“After you left for the graduation I went to check on Carson,” Lydia reported. “When I reached his room I found that he was gone. Apparently he made a full recovery and left without telling anyone.” She saw the shocked expressions on their faces as she continued. “I went to check on Sara and she too was awake but still very week. She said that she felt alright but that she was just very tired. I got a similar answer from Lawrence.”
Laura sighed with relief, “At least they’re awake and doing better. I was so worried about them.”
Kevin nodded in agreement, “Did Dr. Murphy call to check on them?”
Lydia shook her head, “No, was he supposed to?”
“Yes,” Kevin said, “He was going to run some tests and call back with the results. I forgot to mention that when we were rushed to leave for the graduation.” He thought for a second as he looked at the stairs, “Should we go up and see Mom and Larry?”
Lydia looked unsure, “I don’t think so. It might be best to let them keep resting. I’m sure they’ll let us know when they feel like company.” She checked her watch, “In the mean time we need to finish getting everything ready.”
As Lydia and Kevin headed for the pool area, Laura and Josh slipped away and headed upstairs to her bedroom. They shut the door and embraced each other as they began to kiss. After a few minutes Laura pulled away and said with a devilish gleam in her eye, “Why don’t we get changed and head out the pool. I can think of a hundred things we can do in the hot tub.”
Josh smiled, “I like the way you think, but I don’t have a bathing suit.”
Laura grinned, “That’s okay. You don’t need one.”

Lori Jo arrived at the mansion a few minutes later. As she stood outside waiting for someone to greet her, beautiful thoughts of her destructive plans came to mind. She had so many devious ideas that she did not know where to begin! Lori Jo gave herself a smug look of self satisfaction. The best part was that no one knew what she was doing. She would have them all fooled into thinking that she was the same sweet Lori Jo that Laura had known since elementary school.
The front door opened and Lydia appeared to welcome Lori Jo into the house. Immediately Lydia began going on about how long it had been since she had see Lori Jo. She kept gushing on and on, making Lori Jo slightly embarrassed. Then Lydia began to apologize for taking so long to answer the door and something about being out by the pool.
Lori Jo was not interested. She just nodded politely and threw a few forced compliments for good measure. The old woman was beginning to annoy her as they made their way out to the pool. She would have to continue the charade a little longer until the right time. This was not what she was here for. Socializing was the last thing on her to do list. It was time to find Laura and rain on her parade.

Moments later Marie’s car pulled into the driveway. As she parked the car she realized that her mind had been so focused on Lawrence that she had barely said a word to her brother. She and Chris had spent most of the drive in silence. At the same time she noticed that Chris was being unusually quiet as well. The two of them always had always been close and always had something to talk about. She turned to him and asked, “Is everything okay?”
Chris looked at her gave a weak, “Yeah.”
Marie was not convinced. She did not want to pry too much but at the same time she wanted to know if something was wrong. “Are you sure? You know you could tell me if there were.”
He smiled, “I was just thinking about how different it’s going to be after you’re married and you move out. I haven’t seen you much lately and I guess I was starting see what it would be like when you’re gone.”
Marie had never really thought about that. Of course she thought about what it would be like when she moved in with Lawrence but she never thought about how it would affect her brother or her father. She smiled back, “I know it’s going to be different but very little will change. I’ll still be here in town and at our house sometimes. It’s not like I’m taking off to the other side of the world…”
Marie immediately realized what she’d said. That is exactly what her mother did. Her mother had taken off to the other side of the world and there was no telling when she would come home. “I shouldn’t have put it like that.”
Chris nodded, “It’s okay. I was thinking the same thing. At least I know you’ll still be here.” He sighed, “I hope she comes back.”
“Me too,” Marie replied.
They sat for a few more minutes not know what to do. Neither of them was really in the mood for a party. Marie broke the silence, “I had a thought. I’ll go in a check on Lawrence and then we’ll stay for a few minutes just to be polite. After that, if we want to, we can excuse ourselves and just tell them that Dad said we needed to be home early.”
Chris agreed, “That sounds like a plan.” He paused for a moment, “I didn’t really feel like coming tonight but I figured that I should because Kevin’s my friend.” He looked out the window toward the mansion.
Marie raised an eyebrow, “Did something happen between you and Kevin? You used to be best friends and then all of a sudden…” Her sentence drifted off. “Did you have a fight?”
Chris gave a small laugh, “Having a fight sounds so trivial in comparison…”
Marie struck a nerve. Now she knew that something was wrong. “Chris…you can tell me. What is it?”
At that moment someone knocked on the window. It was Leanne and Lana Kim. Marie rolled down her window and said hi.
“We just pulled in behind you,” one of them said. “We’re going on inside, are you coming?”
Marie smiled, feeling bad that she still can’t tell the two girls apart. “Yeah, we’ll be right behind you.” The twins smiled and bounced away with their usual upbeat auras. Marie turned back to Chris, “sorry about that.”
Chris took a deep breath, “that’s okay. They came at the right time to illustrate my problem.”
Marie was confused, “The twins?” She thought about it for a minute as she realized that it was around the time that Kevin started hanging out with the twins that Chris stopped talking about him. “It has something to do with Kevin becoming friends with the twins.”
Chris nodded, “Yeah, that’s part of it.”
Marie asked, “Tell me the rest of it.”
He finally gave in, “Okay.”

Twenty Five: Graduation [16 Aug 2005|03:06pm]
Laura was surprised when her cell phone rang but when she saw the caller ID she was thrilled. The name read Lori Jo Butler, Laura’s best friend from high school. It had been over a month since they had talked. The end of the semester was crammed with last minutes tests, projects, and the dreaded exam week. Laura felt bad that she had not called Lori Jo in a while but their friendship was so strong that it would not hurt them in the slightest. She answered the phone and was greeted by her friend.
“Hi, Laura! It’s me!” came Lori Jo’s energetic voice. “I just saw you leave the school and wasn’t able to catch you in time! What’s going on?”
Laura was riding in the backseat of Kevin’s car with Josh, “I’m just heading back to the house. We have a few people coming over to hang out tonight. You should definitely come join us!”
“That sounds great!” Lori Jo replied, “It’ll be good to catch up!” She paused. “So much has happened lately, I haven’t been able to call you.”
Laura laughed, “That’s okay, and we’ve had our share of ‘happenings,’ too. Just come on out to the mansion; it’ll be great!”
“Sounds good!” Lori Jo exclaimed, “I’ll be there soon!”

Marie knew thought that her father would be shocked by the news of her wedding, but in reality he was very accepting of the idea. When she explained that all of the details were taken care of, her father was very pleased at how responsible his daughter and her finance had been. Marie was very happy about his reaction.
Brian hugged his daughter, “I’m just glad that you are happy! I know you and Lawrence are going to have a wonderful marriage.” When he let go of her he raised an eyebrow, “You know this means you only have a week before the big day! Even though everything has been taken care of, we still have to set it all into motion! There’s going to be a lot to do!”
Marie smiled, “I know, and I’m ready for it! There is one thing that bothers me about changing the date.” Her voice grew softer and more solemn. “Mom won’t be able to come.”
Brian did not say anything. He just nodded in agreement.
“Maybe she will still come when she planned,” Chris said, trying to keep the conversation from becoming depressing. “We could have a smaller reception or something then too.”
Marie felt a little better, “That would be really nice. You’ll have to help me plan it!”
Chris grinned, “Sure.”
She looked at her watch, “We should probably start heading to the mansion. We don’t want to be too late getting there, especially if we have to be back home by one.” Her father shot her a look that told her to try again. Marie sighed, “Midnight?”
Brian relented, “Alright. Just call me when you’re on your way home and be careful.”
Marie and Chris said goodbye to their father as they headed to her car. As they drove toward the mansion Marie began to worry about Lawrence and was praying that he was alright. Hopefully he was awake by now.

Twenty Four: Graduation [13 Aug 2005|03:10am]
In the auditorium of Northridge High School, the graduation of the class of 2005 came to an end. As the graduates left the building, their families and friends followed close behind in order to give their congratulations.
Through the crowds of people Kevin was able to find Laura and Josh. As he headed toward them, Kevin was surprised to see his father standing there, too. The next few minutes were spent exchanging well-wishes and thank-yous. Kevin thought that it was unfortunate that his mother has not been able to be there but he knew that it was not her fault. He also understood why his grandmother had not been able to come either.
As they were starting to leave, Leanne and Lana Kim came rushing up to see Kevin. They were both smiling as Leanne reached out and gave him a big hug. Then Kevin introduced the twins to his father, his sister, and Josh.
Leanne and Lana acted excited to meet them. They started talking to Laura and complementing her on her clothes and hair. This sparked a conversation among the three of them that somehow ended up with the twins being invited back to the mansion. Kevin was certainly alright with this idea and his father did not have any objections. In fact, his father pulled out his cell phone in order to make sure that there would be plenty of food and drink ready for them when they got home.
The twins said that they would meet Kevin back at the mansion. Leanne told him that her mother had giving her the keys to the car for the evening. As they left, Derrick excused himself too and said that he would see them back at the mansion. Kevin and Laura were both surprised at how active he had been this evening. As they headed toward the parking lot with Josh, Kevin saw Marie. He stopped and invited her to join them back to mansion. She told him that she would join them later and that she wanted to see how Lawrence was doing.
They rode back to the mansion in Kevin’s car. Laura’s convertible still had not been unpacked and Josh’s car was at his parents’ house. As they drove, Kevin’s mind began to wonder about the test results that Doctor Murphy was running. Hopefully there would be some word on the matter when he got back to mansion. Until then he tried to think about how he would spend the evening with Leanne.

Marie stood in the lobby of the auditorium waiting for her father. She was glad that Kevin had invited her back to the mansion because she was really worried about Lawrence. But before she headed back to the mansion she wanted to see her family for a few minutes. At some random point in the evening she remembered that she had not told her father about the wedding being moved forward. Seeing as though Lawrence was in no condition to be planning a wedding, Marie worried that the change of date might not happen as they had planned.
“Marie!” someone called out to her.
She saw her father and brother coming toward her. Marie met them both with a big hug. After a few salutations, she told them how Lawrence was doing and that she planned to go back to the mansion to see him again.
Brian Richardson smiled as he hugged his daughter. “That’s okay with me, just as long as you come home tonight. I know last night was an exception, but it’s probably not a good idea to stay again tonight.”
Marie nodded, “I understand.” She knew what her father was trying to say. He was not so much worried about her staying at the mansion as he as about he staying with Lawrence. Her father tried not to pry into her business but at the same time she knew that he worried about her. Marie also knew that he worried about her being near Carson Evans. For reasons that she did not know, her father had a problem with the man and it was evident any time the named was mentioned. This would probably not be a good time to say anything.
Marie turned to her brother, “Do you want to come with me to the mansion? Kevin said they were having some food and that Leanne and Lana were coming over too. It sounds like they’re having a small graduation party.”
Chris Richardson was the same age as the twins, only a year younger than his sister and Kevin. He and Kevin were friends but he had only spoken to the twins once or twice. “Sure,” he replied, “You don’t think they would mind?”
Marie smiled and said jokingly, “Of Course not! After next weekend, you will practically be family to them!”
“Next weekend?” Brian and Chris said in unison.
Marie flashed a guilty look, “We need to talk about that.” She took a deep breath. “Larry has already taken care of everything and he wants to move the wedding to next weekend. I already told him yes.”

Someone else was also at the graduation. She watched as the car drove away with Laura Evans and Josh Stanford in the backseat. The girl frowned. She could not believe that Laura had been back in Northridge and had not even called her. She pulled out her cell phone as she headed to her own car. Just as she was about to make a call, a car pulled up next to her. She spun around and saw the impossible. The girl could not speak as she fainted from shock. Her cell phone clattered to the ground.
In a flash her body was pulled into the car and another person emerged. The new girl picked up the cell phone and took the other girl’s purse. As the car drove away, the new girl continued to “her” car as if nothing ever happened. With the car keys found in the purse, the new girl cranked up the car and prepared to drive away. She smiled wickedly as she dialed a number on the cell phone.
When the other line picked up, the new girl said, “Hi, Laura! It’s me!”

Twenty Three: The Evans [11 Aug 2005|02:26pm]
Laura and Josh were surprised that someone knocked on the door. They both sat up in confusion as they wondered who it could be. Josh gestured for Laura to keep quiet as he called, “Who is it?”
From the hallway a voice said, “It’s Kevin. Laura wasn’t in her room and I was wondering if you knew where she was.”
Laura and Josh glanced at each other with looks that said ‘We’re in trouble.’ Laura quietly slipped out of bed, grabbed her clothes and slinked into the bathroom. She was afraid her brother might enter the room and find her in bed with Josh.
Kevin continued, “If you see her, tell her to make sure she’s on time for the graduation. We’re all running late and I wanted make sure she remembered.”
Josh responded, “Will do.” He too got out of bed and began searching for his clothes. He pulled on his pants and went to the door. He opened it slightly and stuck his head through the opening. He saw Kevin standing near by and he said, “You can go ahead and get ready for the ceremony. I’ll find her and make sure she’s ready to go in time.”
Kevin nodded, “Thanks, we need to leave as soon as possible.”
Josh shut the door as Kevin left. He turned headed to the bathroom to check on Laura. When he knocked on the door, Laura emerged fully dressed and with an amused look her face. Josh raised an eyebrow, “What?”
Laura smiled, “That was close. It’s a good thing he didn’t come in here.” She put her arms around Josh. “What did he want?”
Josh held her close and said, “He looking for you so he could remind you that we have to leave for his graduation. Apparently they must have forgotten about it because they’re all running late.”
A frown formed on Laura’s face, “I forgot about it too. I wanted stay here with you.” She pretended to pout. “I should probably take you home on the way.”
Josh shook his head, “You don’t have to do that. I’ve already decided that I’m going to the graduation with you.” He touched her cheek, “Let’s get ready, we’re late, too.”

“How are you?” Derrick asked Rebecca over the telephone. He could not begin to describe how good it felt to talk to her again. It was as if he had just spoken to her yesterday. Her voice was exactly the same as he remembered it and it was soothing to hear her say his name.
Rebecca did not even acknowledge his question, “Why are you calling me? We had an agreement to stay out of contact.” She sounded very uncomfortable and she spoke in a hushed tone, as if she were scared someone would hear her.
Derrick tried to apologize, “I know I said I would leave you alone, but I had to call you to make sure you were alright. Last night was the worst storm we’ve seen in years and there was so much damage everywhere.” He paused, “I was really scared that something might have happened to you.”
Rebecca was silent.
“I know I shouldn’t have called but I couldn’t help it.” Derrick began to twist the phone cord out of nervous habit. “After seeing your son last night I couldn’t stop thinking about you.”
She cleared her throat and her voice weakened as though she were trying not to upset herself. “Josh called me earlier and told me that he stayed the night at your home last night. I guess I should have figured that you would call.” She sighed, “I appreciate the concern and I’m glad my son and your daughter are good friends, but you and I do not need start this again.”
Derrick was caught off guard, “Start what again?”
“THIS,” she said strongly, “You and I.” The sound of hear tears and pain became overwhelming. “We can not allow ourselves to become involved again. It was not fair to our families the last time and it certainly wouldn’t be fair to them this time.”
Derrick was speechless.
Rebecca continued, “Derrick, I love you…you know that. And I know you love me, but we can not give into temptations. We need to leave the past alone.” He voice was about to give out. She spoke the last words softly. “Good-bye.”

As Kevin, Laura, Josh, and Marie left for the graduation ceremony, Lydia stayed behind in order to take care of the others who were still unconscious. She promised them that she would try to make it to the graduation if possible. After they were gone she headed back upstairs to see how the others were doing. She felt guilty that she had not checked on Carson at all so she headed to his room first. Having a conscience could really be a downfall sometimes.
When she reached the bedroom that she and Carson shared, Lydia felt a nauseating feeling that made her wonder what she ever saw in him. Back in their youth, Carson had been very handsome and well-groomed man of whom she was quite fond. Lydia was even certain that she loved him at one point in time but she had no way of knowing how shady and manipulative he would become. There was no telling how many schemes he had instigated or how many lives he had affected. Sure he had saved many lives as a doctor, but at the same time he had probably destroyed just as many lives. Lydia shuddered at the thought of what other secrets he could be hiding.
Lydia entered the bedroom and immediately could tell something was wrong. She went straight to the bed only to find it empty. The covers and pillows were out of place and there was no sign of Carson anywhere. After checking the bathroom and the closets Lydia came to the conclusion that Carson really was not there. Apparently he had made a full recovery and took off without anyone knowing. Hopefully Carson was trying to find out the truth behind what happened to them last night. Since he told no one what his plans were, Lydia had no way of knowing where he was or what he was doing…or whether or not he really was well.
As she left the bedroom, Lydia shook her head and washed her hands of the whole thing. She had other family members who needed her help. At least her son and daughter-in-law actually appreciated having family members who loved them. Carson heart grew colder by the minute and Lydia began to wish that someone would smash it and shatter it to pieces.

Twenty Two: The Evans [08 Aug 2005|02:12pm]
It had been several hours since Doctor Murphy had left the mansion and the suspense was building inside Kevin as he waited for any news. He had been sitting with his mother in hopes that she would wake up soon. His grandmother joined him and Kevin filled her in on the reports given by the doctor.
Lydia was shocked, “I can’t believe someone would do something like this.” Although she knew deep down that there were plenty of people who really would. It would not be surprising if Carson caused this in some way, she thought. That made Lydia remember the computer file that she had just read. Could the last picture on that disk be the person responsible for all of this? Her head began to fill with a million possibilities. Perhaps Carson had know this person could not be trusted and was trying to bring them down? What Lydia found truly disturbing was that this person worked inside the mansion and was someone she trusted very much.
“Are you okay?” Kevin asked his grandmother.
Lydia looked up, “Yes, I’m alright. My head is beginning to hurt.” As she rubbed her temple she glanced at her watch. “Oh! Aren’t you and Marie supposed to be at the school soon? The graduation ceremony starts in an hour!”
Kevin was stunned as he realized that he had completely forgotten about graduation. He had been so caught up in the events of the last twenty four hours that his mind had pushed everything else away. “I need to get ready, but what about Mom and the others?”
“Don’t worry about them; I’ll make sure they are taken care of.” Then she added, “Make sure Marie did not forget about tonight, too.” Lydia turned back to check on Sara. As Kevin left, Lydia began to worry again about the safety of everyone in the mansion. With this new threat on their hands everyone in her family could be in danger. It did not matter if the person who put the drugs in the food was after one person or all of them because it was clear that they were all targets now.

Derrick was at his office sitting behind his desk and worrying about his troubles. His wife, brother, and father had all been rendered unconscious and all he could think about was Rebecca Stanford and her safety. He knew his feelings for Rebecca were wrong and that he was being a disloyal jerk to his wife and family. Rebecca was a part of his life long before any of them and he never completely got over her. She was his first love and maybe his true love.
He pounded his fist onto his desk in frustration. He looked down at the surface of the desk where his hand hit the desktop calendar. Beneath his fingertips was the word “Graduation” written on the current date.
“Crap,” he muttered as he remembered his son’s graduation. At that moment Derrick’s mind concocted a plan. He would call the mansion and check on everyone and then out of concern for his daughter’s friend, he would call the Stanfords and check on them. His alibi was perfect and no one would find it suspicious at all.
Derrick called the mansion and spoke to his mother. She told him what the doctor had said but sounded as if she was holding something back. Lydia insisted that everything was fine at the moment. Derrick told her that he would meet them at the graduation. After that he hung up the phone and dialed the number for Matthew and Rebecca Stanford.
As the phone began to ring Derrick’s stomach began to twist into knots. It had been several years since he had spoken to Rebecca. They had agreed to stay out of contact with each other for the sake of their families. Given the past that he and Rebecca shared, she felt as if it would be best that no one knew they had once been lovers. Derrick did not know how she would respond this sudden phone call.
The other line picked up and a female voice answered, “Hello?”
Derrick sighed, it’s her, he thought. It would have been uncomfortable if her husband had picked up. “Rebecca?”
“Yes,” she said sounding unsure.
Derrick took a deep breath, “It’s me.”
Rebecca was silent. Finally she breathed, “Derrick?”

Laura curled up closer to Josh as they lay together under the covers. She had a smiled on her face that screamed satisfaction. Of course she had the nagging feeling that told her that maybe they should have waited but she let those concerns fly out the window…the second story window. She suppressed a giggle. Laura had never felt better in her life. She put her hand against Josh’s bare chest and felt his heart beating.
Josh took a hold of her hand he kissed her forehead. He held her close and took a deep breath, smelling the soft scent of her hair. No one else had ever made him feel like this. Josh knew that he loved Laura and that he would never love anyone else. He pulled her into a kiss and he felt her go limp with passion.
They had been together in the guest room for hours. With the door locked and no one around to bother them, they planned to stay there all day. Laura felt as if she could stay there with Josh for the rest of her life and never leave his side.
Then there was a knock at the door.

Twenty One: The Evans [05 Aug 2005|01:19am]
Laura could feel her heart beating wildly as Josh pulled her closer. As their lips touched it was as if they were the only two people on the earth and nothing else in the world mattered. She could feel his body next to hers as they held each other. He was still warm and not completely dry from his shower but Laura did not care. She was just glad to have him in her arms. This moment was going to bring their relationship to a new level.
Abruptly Josh pulled away. “I’m sorry,” he said. “I shouldn’t have done that.”
Laura held tight to him. “Don’t be sorry. I’ve been waiting for this moment.”
“I really do like you.” Josh told her. “I don’t want you to think I’m just using you or anything.”
Laura smiled and looked into his eyes. “I know you would never do anything like that. I’ve like you since the first time we met and as we became better friends I found my feelings getting stronger.”
Josh smiled back at her. “I felt the same way about you but I never told you because I wasn’t sure how you felt about me. We were getting along really well and I didn’t want to assume anything.”
Laura could feel her insides tighten with anticipation. She was so excited that their relationship was finally making a serious move. “So where do we go from here?”
He leaned forward and kissed her. “Lets find out.”

Kevin could not find his father anywhere in the mansion. Apparently he must have gone to work earlier this morning without telling anyone or checking on any of his relatives. That was very typical of his father and it did not faze Kevin in the slightest. He would just have to take care of matters himself. Kevin was ready to speak with Doctor Murphy when he was finished with the examinations.
As they headed downstairs Doctor Murphy gave a brief description each patient. No one had any major injuries and all of their symptoms were consistent with Kevin’s narcotic theory. The doctor continued, “Fortunately the doses thy received were not fatal. It was probably just enough to make sure they were in a deep sleep. All three of your family members were showing signs of REM sleep as well as patterns of movement and speech. I’m confident that they will all wake up by this evening.”
“Will there be any affects from the drugs?” Kevin asked.
The doctor nodded, “Most likely but it could affect them each differently. They might feel wide awake and ready to go or they may still feel like they are dragging and need more sleep. There’s no way to tell for sure until they are awake.”
When they reached the front door Kevin reminded the doctor about the bottle, “After you take the bottle to the lab, when will you have the test results?”
Doctor Murphy gave an assuring nod, “I am going to run the test personally and I will have the test results tonight.” As he headed out the door the doctor turned back. “Make sure you let your dad know what’s going on. He may have to call the police after I get these results.”

Lydia sat behind the computer in her private sitting room. She had just loaded the disk that Franz gave her into her computer. As the computer was scanning the disk for viruses Lydia pulled up some of her other secret files. She smiled wickedly as she thought about how furious Carson would be if he knew how many of his files she had stolen. He had no idea how brilliant she was at the computer and how well she could cover her tacks.
It was not long ago that Lydia found a hidden surveillance camera in the room. If looked as if her husband was suspicious of how she spent her time in there. It did not take much effort for Lydia to tap into the video feed and tamper with it so that Carson would not see what she was doing. Sometimes he saw her reading a book and sometimes he saw her doing her needlework. In reality she was usually at her computer. This had also made her suspicious of the possibility of listening devices in the room. Even though she had not found any bugs Lydia was always careful to keep her movements quiet.
When the file opened Lydia found a file that Carson had created the previous evening before the disastrous events at dinner. There was a lot of information about Northridge Hospital and some of the workers. Farther into the file was information about the families of these workers, including the two Korean girls that Kevin had brought to mansion the day before. Last was information about someone completely random that Lydia was not expecting to see.
Lydia could not figure out what all these people had to do with each other. She decided that she would have to read everything in the file in order to put the pieces of the puzzle together. She sincerely hoped that this file did not mean trouble for any of these people. But Lydia thought realistically: if Carson had dirt on any of them, then they would most likely be facing a great deal of trouble. .

Twenty: The Evans [02 Aug 2005|09:35pm]
Lydia was still shaken about finding Marie and her son in bed together but at the same time she decided that Marie must be telling the truth. Marie did not seem like the kind of girl who would take advantage and man who was passed out. It was an interesting but morbid thought that Lydia quickly removed from her mind. Having just phoned for a doctor Lydia headed downstairs to see if the repair crews had arrived.
Fortunately the crews were just arriving as she reached the entry hall. Greta, with her forehead bandaged, was showing the crew to the dinning room. Once the crew got started on the repairs Lydia pulled Greta aside and told her to take the afternoon off so that she would not aggravate her injuries. Gratefully Greta excused herself and left the mansion.
After she worked out the details with the crew chief and ensured his payment, Lydia made herself comfortable in the living room so she could wait for the doctor to arrive. She began to read a book as one of the servants entered the room.
“Excuse me, Madam,” Franz said apologetically, “I just needed to clean a few things in this room before heading upstairs to clean.” He stood by the end table next to Lydia’s chair.
Lydia closed her book and placed it on the table. “That’s fine,” she said casually.
As he leaned over to straighten the lamp, Franz slipped a computer disk into the front cover of the book. He continued to rearrange the contents of the table and then moved on to another area of the room.
Lydia retrieved her book and stole a glance at the disk. The compact disk was marked “for your eyes only.” Lydia stood up and headed to her private sitting room. On the way out she slipped a crisp new bill to the servant. Lydia smiled as she remembered the title of an old spy movie.

Marie continued to wait by Lawrence’s side, hoping that he would regain consciousness. She was confused and frustrated by the whole situation. There was no reasonable answer to why Lawrence, Sara, and Carson all fell unconscious. Marie stood up and began to pace the room, praying that the doctor would arrive soon. Had Mr. Evans not been affected by this too, she thought, they would not have to wait for a doctor. He could have looked at the others and made a diagnosis himself. Unfortunately the world does not work that way and they were all stuck waiting for help to arrive.
At that moment Lawrence began to mumble in his sleep. Marie moved closer to him and leaned closer to listen. She could not tell what he was saying. She took his hand and continued to listen. She could see movement beneath his eyelids. Hopefully that was a good sign! Lawrence’s eyes began to open slightly, just enough for Marie to see his eyes. He was still speaking softly.
“…tired…”
Marie could barely make out the word. She began to whisper back to him, encouraging him to talk to her.
“…can’t…move…”
She was not even sure that she had heard him right. Was he just physically not able to move or was he just too tired to move? Lawrence just speaking a fraction of what he wanted to tell her. She sat there listening to him until she heard the doorbell ring. Hopefully the doctor had finally arrived.

Kevin was ready for when the doctor arrived. In his pocket he had the clear bottle secured in a plastic bag. When he heard his grandmother phone the doctor he decided that it would be best to give it to the doctor for examination. Kevin knew that this bottle was important and that it could help the doctor know how to treat the others. When the doorbell rang he did not even wait for the servants, he answered the door himself.
On the other side of the door stood a young doctor who looked to be only a few years out of medical school. He introduced himself as Dr. Jordon Murphy M.D. of Northridge Hospital. Kevin showed the doctor into the mansion and led him upstairs. On the way Kevin gave Dr. Murphy a brief synopsis of events the last evening. He was careful to point out that out of all nine people eating dinner, only three were affected.
“Doctor Murphy,” Kevin said as they stopped outside of the door to Lawrence’s room. He kept his tone of voice serious and even. “Is it possible that they could have been drugged?”
Doctor Murphy was caught off-guard. “Why would you ask that?”
Kevin pulled out the bottle but kept it out of view. “The whole thing just doesn’t make sense. Three people were rendered unconscious within seconds of each other and they are all in the same condition.”
The doctor nodded, “It sounds like it could be possible but it seems very improbable that someone could get into the mansion and do this undetected. I’m sure there is a much simpler explanation for what happened.”
“I think it’s more than probable that they were drugged.” Kevin held out the bag containing the clear bottle. “I found this on the floor of the kitchen this morning. I think that someone mixed the contents of this bottle into the food last night.” He quickly added, “I put it in the bag so that potential fingerprints wouldn’t be lost.”
Dr. Murphy took the bag from Kevin and opened it carefully. He used the bag to hold the bottle so that the fingerprints would be saved. He was also careful to remove the lid to the bottle. After examining the bottle and smelling the remnants of the contents, Dr. Murphy gave a solemn, troubled look to Kevin. “I’m afraid you might be right. This bottle used to contain a narcotic. I’m not sure exactly what kind it was but it must have either been really strong or someone distributed it to your family members in large quantities.”
Kevin was relieved to finally have an explanation. Now he began to wonder if they should call the police.
Dr. Murphy still held the bottle. “I should keep this for now. After I examine everyone I will take it back to the hospital labs in order to have tests run. If this does prove to be a drug then you should have someone in your family call the police and file a report.”
“I’ll find my father and fill him in while you are checking everyone. It would probably be better if he were the one to call the police if necessary.” Kevin led the doctor into Lawrence’s room. “Marie can show to the next room after you are finished here.”
As Kevin headed toward his father’s room something that Doctor Murphy had said came back to him: "It seems very improbable that someone could get into the mansion and do this undetected?" He stopped dead in his tracks as the chilling thought hit him: What if that someone were still inside the mansion?

Nineteen: The Evans [31 Jul 2005|11:04pm]
When the bedroom door opened with no warning Marie sat straight up in bed looking at the shocked expression on Lydia’s face. The poor woman looked mortified to see Marie in bed with her son. Marie immediately got out of the bed and moved toward her future mother-in-law feeling the need to explain. “Mrs. Evans I swear we were not doing what you think!” She gestured to Lawrence, “He still hasn’t regained consciousness. We really should think about calling a doctor. The roads should be clear by now.”
Lydia still looked unsure of what to say. She just stood there with her hands clasped and a worried look upon her face. “Yes,” was all she could say to Marie.
Several thought ran through her mind as Marie though how twisted it would have been for her to have done something to her incapacitated fiancé during the night. Marie rolled her eyes, “For Pete’s sake,” she told her, “I still have on my cloths from last night!”

Kevin had been searching the dinning for the last thirty minutes trying to find anything that would give him a clue as to what happened to his family last night. He had to hurry before the crews arrived to clean up and repair the room. Then he had an epiphany: if anything questionable had really happened, it would have originated in the kitchen. Quickly he headed through the servant’s door connecting the two rooms. There were still pots on the stove, food lying on the counters, and dishes scattered everywhere.
Using logic Kevin ruled out the stove. Since only select people were effected during dinner, he should look to where the individual plates were prepared instead of the bulk of the dinner. Realistically he knew that the real evidence would have been hidden or disposed immediately after use; however, if the culprit were careless or if a sudden commotion, or storm, interrupted the evening…there might be a tiny clear bottle left on the floor.
He could not believe his luck as he looked down at the bottle. His instincts had been right and that felt good. Kevin knelt down on the tile floor to retrieve the evidence. Thinking twice he grabbed a plastic baggie and a utensil in order to avoid leaving or destroying finger prints. After sealing the bag, Kevin put it in his pocket and began to continue his search. He turned and found himself face to face with one of the servants.
“What are you doing here?” the servant asked.
Kevin was caught off-guard but he shot a convincing alibi, “I came down for a snack. It looks like lunch will be late today since the kitchen will be out of service for a while. Excuse me,” he said as he moved pass the servant.
As Kevin left the room the servant’s eyes narrowed. He knew exactly what Kevin had been doing there. They were both looking for evidence, but for different reasons. Unlike Kevin, this “detective” was trying to cover a crime, not expose it. One thing they had in common was that they both knew who had possession of the evidence.

Laura left her room in order to find out if Josh was still asleep or not. She knocked on the door to the guestroom and did not receive a response. Looking down both ends of the hallway, in hopes that no one would see her, Laura opened the door and entered the room. Josh was not in the bed but the covers were still undone. Sounds from the bathroom told Laura that Josh was in the shower. That same devious smirk appeared on her face as she thought of how she might “accidentally” walk in on him. That would be…embarrassing. Laura stifled a laugh and ended up making a snorting sound.
From the bathroom Josh said, “Hello? Is someone there?”
“Crap,” Laura muttered. How could he hear her with all that running water?! She played it cool, “Sorry to barge in,” she said, moving closer to the bathroom door. “I just came to see if you needed anything. I knocked on the door but you didn’t answer so I figured it would be okay to come in.”
The water shut off. “That’s okay,” he said. “Actually I can think of one thing I need.”
“What’s that?” she asked.
The door opened there stood Josh in nothing but a towel. “This,” was all he said as he grabbed her and pulled her close to him with a kiss.
Laura completely melted as she felt the smoothest lips against hers and the most passionate kiss anyone had ever given her. It was like a page out of a bad romance novel or one of those cheesy soap operas on the television. Either way Laura fell for him right then and there. And she fell hard.
